Understanding Windows 11 System Requirements
Windows 11 brings a range of new features and security improvements, but it also comes with specific system requirements to ensure optimal performance and compatibility. Before upgrading, it is important to understand these requirements so you can determine if your PC is ready for Windows 11.
CPU Requirements
Windows 11 requires a compatible 64-bit processor with at least 1 GHz clock speed and 2 or more cores. The supported CPUs include:
- Intel 8th generation or newer processors
- AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer processors
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 or newer processors
Older processors might not meet the minimum specifications, which could prevent installation or affect system performance.
Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0
TPM 2.0 is a security feature required by Windows 11 to provide hardware-based encryption and protect sensitive data. The TPM chip helps with secure authentication and prevents unauthorized access.
Most modern PCs manufactured after 2016 include TPM 2.0, but it may need to be enabled in the BIOS settings. PCs without TPM 2.0 are not officially supported for Windows 11.
Secure Boot Capability
Secure Boot is a security standard designed to ensure that devices boot using only software trusted by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). Windows 11 requires Secure Boot to be enabled to protect against malware during the startup process.
You can check whether Secure Boot is enabled via the BIOS or using system information tools.
Memory (RAM) and Storage Requirements
- RAM: Minimum 4 GB of RAM is necessary. Systems with less than 4 GB RAM will not qualify for the upgrade.
- Storage: At least 64 GB of storage space is required to install Windows 11. Some updates and features may require additional space over time.
Graphics and Display
Windows 11 supports DirectX 12 compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver. The display needs to meet the following criteria:
- A high definition (720p) display
- Greater than 9" diagonally
- 8 bits per color channel
Checking Your PC's Windows 11 Compatibility
To verify if your computer meets the Windows 11 requirements, Microsoft provides a PC Health Check tool that can diagnose compatibility issues related to CPU, TPM, Secure Boot, RAM, and storage.
Alternatively, you can manually check system information by:
- Accessing BIOS/UEFI settings to confirm TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot status.
- Checking system specifications for processor model, RAM, and storage availability.
- Verifying graphics compatibility through Device Manager.
Summary
Before upgrading to Windows 11, ensure that your PC meets the necessary criteria including CPU generation, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, adequate RAM and storage, and compatible graphics capabilities. Checking your PC’s compatibility helps avoid installation issues and ensures that you can experience Windows 11's features securely and efficiently.
