How to Install Windows 11 From a USB Drive

A step-by-step guide to installing Windows 11 using a bootable USB drive, covering preparation, backup, installation steps, and post-installation setup.

Preparation Before Installing Windows 11

Before starting the installation process, ensure your computer meets the system requirements for Windows 11. You will need a USB drive with at least 8 GB of storage and a Windows 11 ISO file. To create a bootable USB drive, use appropriate software to write the ISO image to the USB.

Backing Up Your Data

Installing Windows 11 usually involves formatting the installation drive. It is important to back up all important files and data to an external drive or cloud storage to prevent data loss.

Booting from the USB Drive

  1. Insert the bootable Windows 11 USB drive into your computer.
  2. Restart your computer and enter the BIOS or UEFI settings. This is typically done by pressing a key such as F2, F12, Delete, or Esc during startup.
  3. Set the USB drive as the primary boot device.
  4. Save changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI settings. Your computer will restart and boot from the USB drive.

Installing Windows 11

  1. Once booted from the USB, the Windows Setup screen will appear.
  2. Select your language, time, and keyboard preferences, then click Next.
  3. Click Install Now.
  4. If prompted, enter your Windows 11 product key or choose to enter it later.
  5. Accept the license terms.
  6. Choose the installation type. For a clean installation, select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
  7. Select the partition where you want to install Windows 11. You can format, delete, or create partitions here if necessary.
  8. Click Next to start the installation. The process will copy files, install features and updates, and may restart several times.

After Installation: Drivers and Updates

After Windows 11 is installed, it is important to install device drivers to ensure hardware works correctly. Windows Update can automatically download drivers and important system updates. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

Activating Windows 11

Once installation and updates are complete, activate Windows 11 using a valid product key. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation, and enter your product key if you haven’t done so during installation.
